When the Weight Feels Too Heavy

Dear Sisters in Christ,

Some weeks just feel heavy. This past week has been one of them for me. With September being Suicide Awareness Month and another sudden loss making the headlines, I’ve felt the ache in my own heart. Even though I didn’t personally know the person, tragedies like this always stir up old grief, unanswered questions, and quiet pain. They remind me that so many of us are carrying unseen battles every single day.

When the weight of sorrow presses in, emotions don’t usually come neatly packaged. Sometimes sadness shows up. Other times it’s anger, guilt, or even confusion. I’ve had days when it all feels tangled together.

One practice that has helped me through these moments is forgiveness. And not always the kind we think of when someone wrongs us. Often, it’s forgiving myself. Or forgiving circumstances I wish I could change but can’t. Or even forgiving others who didn’t understand my grief.

Here’s how I do it: when the emotions rise, I speak forgiveness out loud so I can hear my own voice.

  • “I forgive myself for feeling helpless right now.”

  • “I forgive this loss I cannot change.”

  • “I forgive others for not knowing how to support me.”

At first it feels awkward. But over time, each spoken word of forgiveness loosens the weight a little. It doesn’t erase the pain, but it makes room—for peace, for hope, and for God’s light to shine through the cracks.

Friend, if you are carrying a heavy load today, please know this: you are not alone. God sees you. He is near to the brokenhearted, and He promises to give rest to the weary.

“Come to me, all ye who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
