Strength in Motherhood: The Power of Our Village

motherhood mothering challenges women need women Apr 14, 2015

Dear Warrior Moms,

Motherhood is a journey of strength and vulnerability. We're not superhuman, although we sometimes feel we should be that way. I once thought I could handle every aspect of motherhood alone, but life had different plans.

My reality check came when my son Nathan was 2 1/2 years old and still not speaking. He hadn't been diagnosed with autism yet, and I'd been trying everything to help him communicate. It was a struggle sending him to preschool while I had our oldest at home. I felt like I should be the one to help him talk, but I realized that maybe professionals could offer something I couldn't.

At preschool, Nathan received Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy, which began transforming his journey. I had to swallow my pride and admit I couldn't do it all. It was the first step in my evolving philosophy on motherhood: It takes a village to raise a child.

I'm grateful for the coaches, teachers, therapists, friends, and even math tutors who have supported my children. I don't have to be a pro in everything, and that's comforting. The secret is that, as we work together, we become stronger. We women need each other--and it is okay not to know everything. Someone here has got your back!

A special shout-out to God, the All-Knowing and Best Parent. He's always there when I don't know where else to turn, guiding me through this beautiful, messy, and incredible journey.

In His Light,

Tamara K. Anderson
