Thank you. Good morning.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:01:33.655 - 00:04:36.441
Good morning. And here we are, guys. We have been talking the last few weeks about the witnesses of Christ leading up to his birth.
And we've kind of talked about Elizabeth and Zacharias and Mary and her story. And now we are coming to another key player in the story and that is Joseph and how he plays into all of this.
So at the beginning, if you want to follow along, we're going to be in Matthew chapter one. And in this beginning of Matthew, we have the genealogy of Jesus Christ. And of course we know that Jesus truly isn't Joseph's biological son.
He, he was conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, is what we read in Luke chapter one. And but because Joseph was his father, he we have the lineage of Joseph and he goes clear back to Abraham.
So we so that the generations of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. And so this kind of comes down, we see that there's Abraham, we see Boaz and Ruth in there. We covered Ruth in this podcast.
We see date King David in the lineage. And I'm not going to read all the names because I probably couldn't pronounce half of them very well, but that's okay.
And then we come to verse 16 and it says, and Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. And this is important because we see that Jesus was born into the kingly line.
In fact, if they were still living with kings as their leaders in Israel, Jesus would have been born as king. Okay. Because he was born in that line. So it's kind of cool to see this now because they were the Israelites were brought into captivity by Babylon.
That didn't happen. But we see that even though Jesus was born in very, very humble circumstances, this was his heritage. He would have been born as king.
Okay, so this is where we pick up the story in verse 18 and it says now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
And I don't know how that conversation went down with Mary and Joseph or if he just found out, hey, she came back from visiting Elizabeth and she looks pregnant. Do you know what I mean? We, we don't know how that conversation went down.
Lemira Wheelwright
00:04:36.473 - 00:04:37.965
That would be terrifying.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:04:38.345 - 00:05:30.775
Oh my goodness. You know, I think, I think Mary must have come back knowing she was showing at this point and she'd had such a positive experience with Elizabeth.
Elizabeth witnessed and knew that she was the mother of the Son of God and then coming back and okay, we've got to face the fire here with, with Joseph because. And I'll let Lemire explain this. I'll read verse 19 and then let. Let Lemyra explain kind of the background here.
It says then Joseph, her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. Now Lemira, I'm going to let you give kind of the historical background of what was typically.
What typically happened in Israel in a situation like this.
Lemira Wheelwright
00:05:30.935 - 00:07:29.147
Yeah. So typically. And this is something I've learned from a religious professor when I was in school.
And he talked that back then and according to the law of Moses, a woman who was right found in the situation would have been stoned according to the law of Moses. I mean we can think that with the woman, woman who was taken in adultery. Right. That we saw, we see later in Jesus's life.
But Joseph knowing that he was a, I love that they say just man. Like he knew, he knew that justice had to happen, but he had so much mercy. And here I just, ah, getting chills.
He's an epitome of Jesus Christ himself and having that justice and that mercy. Right. And trying to find the balance to a woman, I feel like, because he didn't want to put her away publicly.
Like, he didn't want to make a public example of Mary. It tells me that he was kind of like, wait a minute, you know, like you, like you mentioned, like, what do I do here?
You know, because I'm in this situation, and yet I, I think I believe her, but I don't. I just don't know what to do.
And so instead, he was going to do it very quietly, very humbly, and, and not make a big scene of it, you know, which would be hard on him, right? As this man, like, okay, I'm supposed to marry this woman. And. And she's found in this way.
And so I love how humble he is and how meek and willing he is to be like, okay, he must show great respect for Mary. He must have had some of that love there for her to be willing to do that, to want to follow the law of Moses, and yet at the same time, go, God.
Something seems off. Like, help me know what to do here.
Haley Freeman
00:07:29.291 - 00:07:30.513
Can I add something?
Tamara K. Anderson
00:07:30.659 - 00:07:31.205
Yes.
Haley Freeman
00:07:31.325 - 00:08:34.645
Reading about this phase that they have this espoused. And so what it is, is they say that there, it actually holds more weight than when they are married.
So with this covenant that they have is between this, when they are betrothed, when they're engaged, when they're married can last up to a year, that phase. And it's, It's. They're considered man and wife. They're called man and wife, but they don't live together yet. And so this is a very. It's.
It's considered very high in the covenant. And for people that, you know, between them and God, it's very sacred and it's very, you know, very serious.
And then it's, like I said, they say this part is considered even more heavy in the law than even, like, later and more important than even, like, later when the marriage. Marriage ceremony comes later. And like I said, it could last up to a year, but they don't live together yet. They live the law of chastity.
And so that is the phase that Mary and Joseph were in during this time.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:08:35.625 - 00:11:25.085
Yeah, I, I love, I love what you guys have both highlighted and taught us about Mary and Joseph and their situation. I love. And I think God was very careful about where he placed Jesus.
I mean, of all the children being born on the earth, it was very, very important who his mother was and then who his father was, the man that he looked up to while he was in mortality here. And and so God knew who they needed to be.
And I love that what you Drew out Lemyra about him being a just and a merciful man, very kind, full of love. He loved Mary. We can see that. And he was trying to find a solution to a very, very difficult problem. How do I solve this? I love that.
He probably did pray and say, God, how do I do this? How do I figure this out? How do I straddle this justice and mercy? I don't want her stoned. She's such a good woman. He could sense her goodness.
He knew of her goodness. And God, of course, answers. And we'll read about this in verse 20. And on, it says, but while he thought on these things, so he was thinking about it.
I think that's one of the first steps, if you're struggling with a decision, is really think about it, pray about it.
It says, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary, thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son. And thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.
And now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying, behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son. Son. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is being interpreted. God is. Is God with us? And then we'll read what Joseph did here in a little bit.
So let's pause right there. So he has this amazing dream. God spoke to him. Now, God hasn't spoken to me in dreams, but I know Haley's had that example.
I think different people have different gifts, right? And so he's going to speak to each of us differently. And this was definitely one of Joseph's gifts.
And, Haley, I'll let you talk a little bit about dreams, and then we'll discuss a little bit more about.
Haley Freeman
00:11:25.665 - 00:14:16.035
Yeah, so like you were saying, it was during this. His struggle, while he was thinking on these things, while he was in his struggle, is when an angel came to him.
And I think that's often when we get those answers to our prayers and when we have these opportunities for angels to come and minister to us. And I know, like, when. And I love how this is how it says, in his dream, angel came. And.
And I think this says a lot about Joseph, that he was very in tune with the spirit. He was. He had the gift of revelation. He had. He was a visionary man.
He was a bit like, we talked about how humble he was, and we Know in his lifetime he was, was communicated by angels through dreams four times. So this was his first time. And then when Harold was was going to kill Jesus and was in danger, he was visited again in a dream. And then he was.
So he went to Egypt and then he had a dream again saying that it was safe to, to come back. And then that was a dream. And then he had a dream again to go to Galilee. So we know these four times.
And so this is an example to us that we know that this is a way that God can communicate to us is through dreams. And he could send angels in those dreams or he can communicate in different ways through dreams.
And I've had, I've had different sacred experiences with this as well. I know when my dad died, my brother had my dad visit him in a dream. And I've had different experiences. So I know that this is a true principle.
And so that's that I just love reading those experiences experiences in the scripture because we know any miracles or anything that we read in the scriptures can happen to for us in our day. So I love that. And then another thing I just wanted to point out is it's mission twice how it says conceived in her as of the Holy Ghost.
And that can kind of sound confusing, but if you read deeper into that, it means it's through the power of the Holy Ghost because we know he's the Son of God. So that's another point I thought that's a good one to point out in these verses. Yeah, there's.
And then here it's saying Jesus to name him Jesus for He shall save his people. And then it says how he went ahead and did that.
So just knowing how Joseph went ahead and did follow through with naming him Jesus was kind of a testament that Jesus that Joseph had faith that he was going to be the Savior because just the name itself means like to save and that he would be the one to save. Their name meaning God is help and Lord save us. So just the fact that he named him Jesus was a testimony that he knew he was going to be the Savior.
So I thought that was kind of a neat point.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:14:16.695 - 00:14:25.685
Yeah, love that. Oh, so many, so many good insights there. Thank you so much for sharing Lamira thoughts on these verses.
Lemira Wheelwright
00:14:26.025 - 00:16:40.765
Yeah, what struck me is as we were reading, you know, the genealogy, right. And the first thing, and I feel like the reason that's important is not only because we know he would be king, right? King of the Jews.
However, when the angel comes to Joseph, he says, Joseph, thou son of David, Now I believe that Joseph and Mary were very religious, God fearing people. They knew their scriptures, they knew their prayers, they knew, they followed all, they knew the scriptures. I mean, they could quote them, right?
They know this.
And what better way to get the attention of, you know, Jesus's father than to say his earthly father, than to say, thou, son of David and recall his lineage, who he came from, who he's meant for, and then to introduce the Savior, just like Haley said, he said, you're going to call his name Jesus, that's who it's going to be. And then Joseph can recall, oh, I know the prophecies, I know what this is.
And can you imagine what he must have felt suddenly all those prophecies coming back and going, oh, that's, that's me. Oh, oh, I'm that Joseph. I mean, because Joseph was a common name, right?
But, but to go, oh, the son of the lineage from Joseph, although, you know, from Jacob and Joseph and David and now going, oh, this is me, this is me. And I love that, that that's the first thing is so when we're struggling, we don't have a clear answer.
I think it's super important to remember who we are and whose we are and that lineage and that we do have that power behind us. Even if we're in these humble circumstances, we don't know what we're to do.
Oh man, when we've got him on our side, you know, the God, the King of kings, when we've got him with us, man, remember who we are. And I bet that gave Joseph a lot of strength going, yes, okay, this could be me. Yes.
Haley Freeman
00:16:40.845 - 00:17:47.455
I love that you said that. I was thinking about that too. Yes, it like reminded him of those prophecies.
And that's one thing that Matthew, because he's the author of this, these verses, he in the beginning. Well, why. And Tamara kind of mentioned this too.
Like he, why he brought the, that genealogy up is to remind because at the time he's writing for the convincing of the Jews that this is the Savior.
And so he mentioned that lineage again and again because they believed at the time this is the main focus of what they believed the Messiah was going to be. They knew that he was going to be the son of David. He knew they knew there's going to be the lineage of that.
And so I think that is why Matthew kept talking about that. And actually I read something really interesting is they in the Hebrew language, it was not just about number letters, it was also about numbers.
And so he, he did 14 generations. And David in the numbers of the, that language actually was 14. The number, the name David is 14. And then he did 14 generations.
And he kept reiterating to the Jews, this is the Messiah with that lineage. And so I love that you brought that up again.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:17:49.195 - 00:21:11.155
Awesome. Thanks, guys. That is so good. I love, I love, LaMira, that you also introduced that idea of remembering who you are, remember your lineage.
And as we as pause and ponder, our spiritual lineage can go straight to God.
You know that we are children of God and it, it's, it's a good thing to remember when we're stuck with a vexing problem and we're not sure what to do. God surely knows the answer. A few things that stood out to me in those verses were the naming of Jesus Christ.
I love that, that the angel told both Joseph and Mary what his name needed to be. You know, this is what you need to call him. And they both were people of action. And they knew. Okay, done. You know, we will do that.
We're going to take a quick break, but when we get back, we'll have more lessons, tips, and things you can. Apply to your life.
Stay tuned. Hey, my friends, are you looking for a meaningful Christmas gift this year? If so, you need look no further.
I have a fantastic, sweet short story I am so excited to share with you. My new booklet. It's called a Broken Down Holiday.
This is the story of a widowed young mother trying to travel home, home for the holidays soon after her husband dies and being stranded in the middle of nowhere. And some of the hard things that she experiences and some of the miracles that you wouldn't think were miracles that she had happen.
But it is based on a true story that happened to my mother in law. It's great for those friends that you're just like, what do I get them? Something simple. That's under five bucks. It's a great stocking stuffer.
So if you want to share this message of hope with your friends or family members, check it out.
A Broken down holiday on tamarakanderson.com I love how this talks in here about the fulfillment of the prophecy that behold, a virgin shall conceive. And this is referenced in Isaiah. So bringing that to the present, this is the fulfillment of that prophecy.
And all of a sudden Mary being pregnant makes sense. You're like, oh, okay, good, then this makes sense. And this is the time. Kind of like Lamira is saying.
All right, so let's, let's finish this chapter really quick. There are two verses here in this chapter. That we haven't finished yet. It's verse 24 and 25.
And it says, then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him and took unto him his wife and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus. And there's some beautiful things in those verses. And, Lemira, we'll start with you. I know you had something you wanted to share from verse 24.
Lemira Wheelwright
00:21:11.725 - 00:23:38.015
Yeah. I love where it said, then Joseph being raised from sleep and took him. Basically. He. He.
I feel like when I read this this last time, it wasn't just, oh, because the angel woke him up. It was. He went. He was raised from a spiritual sleep. He was able to go, oh, seeing all the prophecies. Oh, he was awakened to his destiny.
Ah, I'm gonna get emotional.
As the earthly father of this savior, that he had the responsibility to raise the Son of God and that he was awakened from that sleep and he went, oh, this is my calling. And then the thing that hits me so hard is it says, he did as the angel of the Lord bidden him and took unto him his wife.
And we don't know the time period, but I feel like he was like, he's up. He's like, this is what I'm to do, and I'm going to do it, and I move forward. He didn't question. He knew.
And from then on, he did what the Lord asked him to do. And as Haley pointed out, the later dreams that Joseph has just shows. He's just like, oh, okay, he's. God speaks. And I do. And I go and I do.
And I feel like, what an amazing man. He's awakened. He's what? He woke up. Sorry. And here he is, and he's just gonna. He's gonna love it. He's gonna do it. And. And I feel like that's in our.
In our lives is these women warriors of light. When we are going, hey, what do I do? And we wake up and the Lord says, hey, this is a troubling situation.
I love this because we are in a time where there's so many confusing things, right? Our children, our families are faced with difficult things that there's not an easy answer to.
We can read the Scriptures, and yet we don't know what to do. This is. Hasn't happened in my line before, or I don't know what to do.
And he can send that angel, he can send that answer, and then it's up to us to take that and go, all right, got it. And go do. And take that example.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:23:40.355 - 00:23:52.255
Wow, that is. That is such amazing insights for Joseph and for us. Right? I love how you drew in that. That's beautiful. Haley, thoughts on these verses?
Haley Freeman
00:23:53.965 - 00:25:38.665
Yeah, I love what she said. Just beautiful. Thank you. I thought. I remember the first time I was in primary, you know, from my church.
We had little primary classes and I remember hearing the stories and what really resonated to me is in Christmas time we would sing a little song called When Joseph Went to Bethlehem. And I remember then feeling a real tenderness toward Joseph.
And that's when I started just to feel kind of a love for him and just a tenderness and appreciation for him. And I thought if it'd be okay, I just read a little bit of the verse because it's just so tender to me. Just.
I'm going to just read a little bit of the first and then the second. So when Joseph went to Bethlehem, I think he took great care. Then I'm gonna go to the next. I think they're at the.
The busy in that he was meek and mild and odd to be the guardian of Mary's sacred child. Perhaps.
Although through the chilly hours he smoothed and swaddled with. Sorry. Oh, it's tender. He smoothed the swaddled swaddling bands.
And Jesus felt the quiet strength of Joseph gentle hands and close beside the manger bed. He dimmed the lanterns light and held the little Jesus close up on that holy night. And I.
I just remember having a testimony of the sweet gentle Joseph even as a little child with those tender words. And. And I just love that, like she said, what we could learn of his attributes. And. And so that's just one of my thoughts on that.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:25:40.045 - 00:30:33.625
Love it. Thanks for sharing those words.
I think often people who write little songs or poems, they have pondered a lot about how can I share my light and how can I share my testimony of Jesus Christ the world. And it's interesting to see that come out in different ways because we each have different gifts. Right.
My final takeaway with these verses is, oh, you guys have covered so much of this so beautifully. I love Joseph acting so quickly and just knowing, okay, that's my answer.
I'm not going to sit and question because often when we get those answers, you know, Satan tries to throw everything at us but the kitchen sink. And he's like, no, no, doubt, doubt. No, no, that's not what was meant.
I mean, I think God spoke to Joseph in a way to where Joseph knew and did not doubt. And he was One of those people who was faithful enough that he just went and acted.
And, and so I think that is that decisiveness, not fearing, moving forward with faith, those are attributes that I really, really admire in Joseph and, and that he would need down the line. He was asked to do different things in dreams.
I mean, leaving your people, going to a different country when you didn't have families surrounding you. I mean, these are not just, hey, easy things to do, you know, go marry, go get married to Mary.
Yes, she's pregnant, but it's okay, you know, this is part of the fulfillment of prophecy, that it eased his fears enough and that he probably was, as you mentioned in that hint in that little song, Haley, that he was odd to be the guardian of Jesus Christ. That would be a humbling calling and responsibility, probably a heavy one. You know, you would feel very responsible for their protection.
And I think as parents we feel that for our children. And I think what's really neat about this is that we can draw on this as a parental role, whether they are biological child or not.
That we, God will give us inspiration to know how to help our children, to help those that are under us. I know that one of the things I'm doing right now is I'm teaching children at church and I pray about the lessons that I teach these kids.
How do I teach them in a way that they can learn? And God gives me inspiration for that even.
So, whether they are our biological children or not, God can inspire us how to bless children, how to protect children, how to teach them what they should do. I know I've had several instances with my children where I didn't know how to solve the problem that they were facing. It was new to me.
I'd never been the parent of a 16 year old before in this particular situation or whatever it is. And I'm just like, dear Lord, just like Joseph, what do I do? How do I solve this? I don't even know. And the same pattern played out in my life.
Pondering. Sometimes I had to do some research and figuring out that was part of the pondering process. Well, here's some things that I found online.
Is this right for my child?
Because sometimes we'll find answers and they might not be the right thing, but God will always answer with what is right for those that are in our care, right? So I love that. And then I love that he called his name Jesus. That was another action he took.
Not only did he marry her, but he gave him the name that he was supposed to have. So that was that was pretty cool. We learned that in last episode that names usually come down in family lines, and so they were bucking tradition.
Just like John wasn't called John the Baptist wasn't named Zacharias. He was named John for a reason. Jesus was named Jesus for a reason, and he fulfilled that prophecy as well.
All right, guys, final takeaways, and we'll wrap it up here. Let's see. Haley, let's start with you.
Haley Freeman
00:30:35.805 - 00:30:55.765
So many. So many takeaways.
I think I'll stick with my favorite, which is knowing that God can communicate to us through dreams, and that's one way of revelation, and that it can happen in our lives, too, and that he will come to us in the moments that we are struggling and that if we ask for help, he will come to us.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:30:57.105 - 00:31:01.285
I love that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Lemira.
Lemira Wheelwright
00:31:01.665 - 00:31:25.865
So mine. After our discussion, that just hit me as one, God knows who you are and whose you are.
Two, he's going to communicate to you in a way that you will understand and that will help you. And three, he will provide that way for you.
And in overcoming these difficult things, he'll give you that way, and he'll support you the whole way through it.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:31:26.245 - 00:33:22.963
Oh, so, so good, right?
I think it is such a blessing to know that we're not alone in these difficult decisions, that God has things in place that he can guide us through it. What a blessing. I. I seriously wonder how non believers do it. How do they make decisions?
I don't know, because so much of my decisions is prayer and pondering and, Lord, is this right? And waiting to feel the answer in my heart. Or Haley's lucky enough to get dreams. That's awesome. You know, I've had.
I know sometimes I hear whispers, but. And that's usually. Or something just feels right, you know, sometimes I'll be going down. Okay, I'll do this then. And it just doesn't feel right.
I'm like, oh, and I have to pause. Okay, well, if I'm not supposed to do that, help me know what I'm supposed to do.
Because sometimes I'm an action taker, and I don't have the whole piece of the puzzle in front of me. And God's like, yep, you're going good. Oh, she's deviating. Okay. Nope, wrong way. You know? And so I'll feel like something is.
Is off, that it's not quite right, and. And that's when I have to pause and say, okay, show me. Show me what I need to tweak Again, So God is good and he will inspire us to know. Hey, you're.
You're going good. You're going good. Oh, oh, tweak just a little bit. Oh, okay. Keep going. Now, you know, and.
And Joseph had that multiple times too, with the dreams, like, okay, you're doing good. Okay, now go here. Now go here. You know, and so take confidence that when he puts you on a path, if, If.
If that path is veering the wrong way, he will instruct you to go the right way again. You know, he is so good as we lean on him to solve these difficult problems. So.

And I love that you keep moving, because I feel like that's sometimes a fear of, like, you're so worried about going the wrong way, it paralyzes you and you freeze. So I love that you keep moving. And, like, you know what? I'll just go. And if it's wrong, he'll.
He'll nudge me this way, you know, and that's such an important lesson to learn. So I love that you do that.

Yeah. Ah. Well, guys, this has been wonderful. What a beautiful witness of Jesus Christ Joseph was.
How neat that he was in the right place at the right time, that he was listening and humble enough to get the answers that he did and then bore his witness of Jesus Christ even in his name, you know, naming him what he was, who he was, his own savior and redeemer. So thanks for joining us on this episode and take courage in the big decisions that you're making that God will guide you in them.
